CE Marking Process – Extrusion Lines for the Plastics Industry

A manufacturer of thermoplastic profiles commissioned the Perimetra Team to verify the compliance status of five extrusion lines installed at its plant. Some of the lines were custom-built and lacked CE marking, while others had undergone revamping over time, involving the addition and replacement of components that altered the machines’ performance.

Such interventions require new CE marking of the line as per machinery directive and pertinent current standards and regulations

The need for measures to improve security, combined with regulatory and legislative gaps, exposed the company to risks that could jeopardize its business continuity.

The process lasted 6 months with the active involvement of Perimetra’s CMSE®-certified (Certified Machinery Safety Expert) technicians , who took into account all the steps necessary for the project’s execution.

1 ) Perimetra risk assessment

The extrusion lines were observed in operation, with particular attention paid to the mechanical movements involved, the downtime, and the tasks performed by the machine operator, identifying and analyzing the risks based on the guidelines contained in the UNI EN ISO 12100 standard.

Several nonconformities were identified, and all the necessary actions to improve safety were therefore specified, in accordance with the latest technical standards, in order to comply with the relevant R.E.S.S.(Essential Health and Safety Requirements) of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

2) Perimetra Safety Design

Since these were on-site repairs, our technician specializing in aluminum products designed and built the necessary protective measures to mitigate the risks involved after conducting a thorough on-site inspection.

3) Perimetra Remediation

Safety upgrades, including the installation of protective guards on the machine, safety sensors, the development of safety logic, and staff training on safety procedures—such as stopping the cutter when the guard is opened.

4) Perimetra CE marking process

Perimetra drafted all the operating and maintenance manuals for the five extrusion lines and provided support in compiling the technical documentation in accordance with legal requirements, including the drafting of a model EC Declaration of Conformity and the corresponding EC label.
